Since the 1950s, the arts became part of the academic domain of psychotherapy. In 1974, Lesley University in the USA established the first expressive arts therapy centre.  The unique outstanding nature of expressive arts therapy has become one of the most important schools of psychotherapy. Its continued enrichment as a therapeutic medium has turned it into a therapeutic method which is diversified and full of creative vitality. Expressive Arts Therapy has made significant impact in social services, psychiatric rehabilitation, medical work, education of children and services for the elderly etc.

The Symposium and Workshops on the Use of Expressive Art Therapies in Mental Health Service has invited three pioneer expressive arts therapists from the Expressive Arts Therapy Department of Lesley University to share their own practice and ideas during the last decades. They would be accompanied by local arts therapists.

From 30th October to 4th November 2013, registrants can take part in the workshops facilitated by the overseas therapies on 3 different days They will experience the very special appeal of expressive arts therapy and closely encounter the clinical skills that the therapists have developed over the years. There is also a 2 day seminar during which not only the overseas therapists will share their research findings; the local therapists will also gather together to explore their own practice and to reflect on their own work. The Symposium and the Workshops will explore the theory and practice of expressive arts therapies from different angles. The application of such therapies in psychiatric rehabilitation and different areas of social work will be examined.
