Highlight Recap – Crafting a Career in Art & Design
Many young people aspire to join the arts and design industries and continue to look for innovative and effective ways to develop their career. Thus, Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association and Hong Kong Art Gallery Association invited renowned Artist anothermountainman (Stanley Wong) and renowned Designer and Founder of Sin Sin Fine Art Gallery Sin Sin Man to share their experience on building up their career. Renowned Artist Kacey Wong moderated a chit-chat session and led a discussion with the audience. This seminar was part of PMQ’s detour 2017 Creative Festival.

Sin Sin recalled her career taking off from On Lan Street. Without any deliberate planning, she naturally got her inspiration from her interactions with different people. anothermountainman believed an artist might not able to plan a career path but everyone could design their own life. He refused to be defined as a successful person, as this identity was like a full-stop. However, he preferred to live his life like a comma, which he could keep moving forward. Thus, he woke up every morning and reminded himself to start afresh like a piece of white paper and keep up with the times.  Kacey Wong said that he need to make an effort to introduce his artist’s identity whenever he met new friends. However, he asked artists not to limit themselves by their identity and remember to keep their sense of humor and fun spirit.

Photo captions:
1. anothermountainman thought that creativity and business could co-exist. He said that many corporate clients were open-minded about works with high artistic value.
2. Sin Sin never had a lack of inspirations and nature was one of her passion.
3. Dr Kacey Wong (left) believed that artists should stay curious and sentimental.
4. The three guests suggested that artists could think of their future in terms of survival and living.

It Begins with A Story: A symposium on artists, writers, and periodicals in Asia
Organised by Asia Art Archive in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong, the symposium explores how periodicals have fostered conversations around art and emergent forms of visuality in twentieth-century Asia.
Free and open to all with registration: http://aaa.org.hk/en/Symposium2018

Date: 11-13 January 2018
Venue: The University of Hong Kong

Periodicals have been more than just platforms or sites for artistic experimentation and exhibition; they have themselves shaped and staged them. In so doing, periodicals have played a defining role in forming diverse publics for art in Asia.

The papers presented in the symposium explore periodicals in relation to emerging practices that cut across genres, new nomenclatures and aesthetic propositions, verbal and visual manifestos, the production of alternative publics and communities for art, and other topics.

Speakers include Charles Esche, director of Van Abbemuseum and co-founder of Afterall; Li Xianting, Beijing-based independent critic and curator; Phoebe Scott, curator of National Gallery Singapore; Michael Erdman, curator of Turkish and Turkic Collections at The British Library, and more.

No Past, No Future
CONSERVE TO SUBVERT
“Make it count!” – Laurence Loh

How often have you heard or used the phrase “Let him think that it’s his idea and you will win support for your cause”? This is covert subversion.
When you march in the streets and occupy a public space, you are viewed as troublemakers trying to influence public perceptions through airtime. This is overt subversion.

Let’s think of heritage conservation as a critical subversive activity.  Which approach will you take, covert or overt?

Laurence Loh, renowned as the “Heritage Crusader” of Penang, Malaysia, has always been looking for covert ways to engage and save Penang’s heritage for future generations.

His milestone restoration project, the Blue Mansion, received the UNESCO’s Most Excellent Project in the Asia Pacific Heritage Award in 2000 and kick-started the path towards the World Heritage Listing of George Town. Riding on the awareness it has created, now conservation is a mainstream activity in Penang.

A new model of subversion can be found in an amorphous advocacy group called the Penang Forum, a loose coalition of individuals and organisations, and has certain impact on political agendas. How does it work?
*********************************************************************
Paul Zimmerman, a natural born activist who never ceases to embrace challenges, adventures and subversions:

At the age of 15, he overthrew the autocratic headmaster by writing articles for the student council.

After 1997, he eventually gave up his corporate suit and has become a notable voice of sustainable urban planning in Hong Kong.

In 2012, he finally decided to ditch his Dutch citizenship and regards Hong Kong as a permanent home.

Paul, on the other hand, is a beginner in Cantonese and a motorcycle lover who rides to work every day and takes detours all the time.

Join us to meet Paul, Laurence and Benny this Sat!

Speakers:
