Producer-oriented Operation Model in Theatre – Strategy and Experience of Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre
About the Seminar
Ever since its company reform in 2009, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre has adapted the producer-oriented operation model. Currently, the Center's management funds has a high self-sustaining rate of over 60%, and is a pioneer among fellow performing art groups as innovative and mature model.

The global art environment is rapidly changing. Topping up are various cultural projects locally – the implementation of various infrastructure of the West Kowloon Cultural District, renovation and launching of numerous old and new Leisure and Cultural Services Department venues, as well as heritage architectural projects such as the Central Police Station Revitalization Project. Now is especially relevant to explore on innovative and proactive ways in operating the theatre.

The Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association is pleased to have invited Miss Jackie Zhang, Vice Manager and Director of Actors Department, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, to share her valuable experience on how the Centre operates with producers as the central point in planning and promoting theatrical productions.

Through this seminar, local performing arts operators can interact and take reference from mainland productions on the experiences and strategic planning in producing self-financing creations, facilitating discussion in the possible long term development of Hong Kong theatre and evaluating the positioning and responsibilities of the producer.

To enrich the session, we have also invited Mr Louis Yu, Executive Director of Performing Arts, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, as respondent. HKAAA's General Manager, Miss Winona Chan, will moderate the session.

Dialogue with HKAAA

Hong Kong Dance Alliance is holding “Dance Enhance: Dance Appreciation & Criticism Writing Project 2014”, which provides a learning channel for people who are interested in writing professional dance reviews. HKAAA is glad to bring you an interview with Hong Kong Dance Alliance about this project.

D: Hong Kong Dance Alliance | 3A: HKAAA

3A: Happy to hear Hong Kong Dance Alliance has started to open the registration for the programme of "Dance Enhance: Dance Appreciation & Criticism Writing Project 2014". Why would you like to launch this programme?

D: Many people in Hong Kong have little knowledge of writing about dance. A lot of audience members can only describe the performance in a single adjective such as "excellent" or"good". This is not really healthy for the development of our industry. In fact, writing dance reviews is not easy because authors should have a good understanding of dance and proficient writing skills in art criticism. Therefore, we would like to introduce a programme for the enthusiasts to learn from experts, artists and writers. Through learning, the participants are able to write a dance review.

3A: It sounds great! The programme setting is constructive for participants to learn how to write a dance review in an effective way. May we know more about the programme structure?

D: This programme can be divided into two parts: assimilation and practice. "Assimilation" is dance appreciation and analysis. "Practice" is criticism. For dance appreciation, we expect that participants can observe the production of dance programme. They will walk inside the rehearsal rooms to get a comprehensive understanding and impression about dance production, and they can also appreciate various types of dance performed by professional local art groups.

For dance analysis, arranging workshops for participants can enhance their ability in analyzing dance gestures and allow them to explore the relationship between the gesture and body movement. By attending four lectures, two workshops and four performances, we expect our participants can have a greater understanding and interest in dance performance and dance review writing.

For dance criticism, our participants will be required to write a dance review after each performance in our series of programmes. Expert dance reviewers will give them comments on their writing. As an encouragement, outstanding articles may be published in our bimonthly dancejounal / hk for appreciation by the public and promotion for dance criticism.

3A: What a great planning it is! So what is the requirement for the participants? And what kind of people do you prefer to join this programme?

D: We welcome all people to join this programme. If you are over 18 and enthusiastic about dance appreciation and dance review writing, please do not hesitate to join the project. The due date of application is 12th September 2014.

Funded by Arts Development Council Multi Project Grant, presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance Limited

Dance Enhance was first introduced by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance in 2009.  It is a project to encourage dance appreciation and criticism.  The programme provided a platform for sharing and critical review for participants where they could exchange views, open up discussions, and publish reviews on various forms of dance. Tickets were provided for participants and in addition, well-experienced dance critics, choreographers, and dancers shared their perspectives with participants.

From September 2014 to January 2015, participants will attend a series of lectures and workshops to learn from experts, artists and writers. In addition, they will attend 4 dance performances presented by professional companies and write reviews on each of the performances. Outstanding works may even have a chance to get published in dance journal/hk or Hong Kong Dance Alliance website!
