Dialogue with HKAAA

InDPanda International Film Festival is the one and only Hong Kong international independent film festival for all kinds of genres and topics. Stepping into its 10th festival, HKAAA has the pleasure to bring to you an interview with Mr Jonathan Hung, Founder of InDPanda International Film Festival.

J: Jonathan | H: HKAAA

H: Jonathan, why do you found the InDPanda International Film Festival?

J: In Hong Kong there was no festival on the theme of an international short moive ten years ago. (IFVA, Incubator for Film & Visual media in Asia, is a competition of short moive, not a film festival.) It is regrettable that many high quality short movies (Time length not over than 60 mins) in independent productions had no opportunity to screen publically. It is the origin of the first year of InDPanda International Short Film Festival.

Thereafter, except short moives, many masterpieces of long films had been sent to us. Therefore, we held InDBear International Film Festival dedicated for screening the long films in independent productions from worldwide. Later on, scale of these two festivals coming big, we decided to divide the part of animation moives from InDPanda and InDBear to InDPolar International Animation Festival.

'Broadway Cinematheque' is a venue we selected to lend for screening the programmes of InDPanda & InDPolar. We selected other movie theatres dedicated for InDBear. However, the rent of movie theatres keeps growing high in the last several years. We decided to search new venues for public screening this year. Moreover, in order to control the resource effectively, three festivals have been combined as one and rename as InDPanda International Film Festival.

In fact, we have no fundings to run our programmes. Including me, only two persons play a volunteer role to maintain the operation. My job is a freelence writer to write articles about films and interviews for a newspaper. My partner is a full-time newspaper editor. Our philosophy is to keep self-financing in operating festivals. We use our own salaries and box office receipts to maintain film festivals every year.

H: It's the 10th festival, how can you make it? What makes you continue to do this?

J: To our philosophy, we believe that we can successfully hold film fesetivals in low cost. Therefore, we can regularly and consistently arrange events for screening even if we have no fundings.

In the last decade, we are practically playing a role as an art groups in other forms to exercise our programmes.

Moreover, we are enthusiastic in independent film productions and we appreciate and trust them. Compared to the attitudes of some institutions, they do nothing if there is no funding. It is a kind of negative thought and behavior we would like to resist on.

We have also met some groups which granted the fundings to coordinate programmes of film and moive. However, they are completely a layman in this field. They only group a certain number of films as a programme to operate. This is what we cannot agree to.

H: What are the challenges?

J: In order to fulfill the philosophy of self-financing, striking a balance between income and expenditure is our main challenge. Unfortunately, our finance record has consistently marked in red.

Despite of the red in financial record, we would like to insist on our programme because there are many regular audiences and new participants to support us. It really affirms us that we are running in a right path.

In my opinion, the quantity of programmes and the diverse participation of venues and moive theatres are the key to the development of film festivals because it allows audiences to enjoy films freely. By the way, we are feeling good to start holding film festival in new spaces this year.
