Hong Kong has been viewed as an international financial centre for years.  Its creative industry and local cultural ‘soft power’, however, seems to have been underrated.

Today, the presentation of a city’s cultural profile has become a key strategy in demonstrating its vibrancy and quality of life.  Hong Kong has rich heritage resources, world-class performing arts groups, internationally acclaimed filmmakers, writers, visual artists and designers: how can we tell the world about this aspect of our city?

The 2014 Cultural Leadership Summit - Branding Hong Kong Through the Arts, co-organised by HKAAA and HKU ACLP, focuses on this question.  We have invited more than 20 of the best minds from Hong Kong and overseas in the arts and creative industry to join us in discussion on issues such as the involvement the cultural sector in city branding, the branding of Hong Kong through cooperation with other countries, the significance of cultural diplomacy in promoting a city to the world, and the roles and identities of branding partners.

We look forward to your participation to explore ways forward and to discover new opportunities.

Co-organised by Hong Kong Design Institute and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), and Vitra Design Museum, Germany, George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher exhibition will showcase the finest selection of the masterpieces of George Nelson (1908 – 1986), one of the most important American designers of the 20th century. George Nelson’s conception of design was wide ranging, not only reputable as a designer, but also renowned as an architect, a writer and a teacher. The exhibition held at HKDI Gallery of HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee) from March to June 2014 offers an overview of Nelson’s designs and insights, from iconic spindly-legged furniture and colourful ball-clocks to his writings and company brochures. His most signature design pieces such as the Marshmallow Sofa, the Bubble Lamps and the Wall Clocks will also be showcased during the exhibition period.
