“Arts Administrator 101” Series ╴Community Arts Engagement in Design Thinking
Presented by: Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association
Co-organizer: Hong Kong Design Centre

Design Thinking is a process of creative problem solving, with an emphasis to focus on the people they are creating for. Design thinking has been increasingly embraced by the world of business, social creative industry and education over the last decades. If the model is adaptable into different business, can we use it to design our community arts programme?

HKAAA is happy to have Ms. Sam Lam, Director of Business Development and Projects from Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), to kick off our 2019/20 “Arts Administrators 101 Series”. Sam will lead the workshop and go through the design thinking process with the participants, together exploring the possibilities of community arts.

Sam has over 18 years of experience in public relations, media, branding and curating and managing arts and cultural projects. Since joining HKDC in 2014, Sam mainly focus working on the flagship programmes of HKDC, including #ddHK, city and community programmes of Business of Design Week (BODW).

【Highlight Recap】Arts Social! - Arts & Finance
HKAAA is happy to have Mr. Ricky Lam, Client Partner of Marlin Hawk, also the Chairman and Chief Executive of Koinonia Music, to be our guest of the last “Arts Social!” Series in 2019/20. The event was successfully held last Friday.

Ricky began with a brief introduction of accounting and auditing. He believed that they are separate financial concept yet as arts administrator should have a fundamental knowledge of both. Through investigating the internal control and procurement procedures, auditing could reflect the financial situation of a company or a project, whether it is fair, reasonable and accurate. Ricky also stressed the importance of leaving an “audit trail”, which means all expenditure should made with supporting evidence.

Before the event took place, HKAAA had collected participants’ questions and shared them with Ricky during the talk. On budgeting, Ricky said that before drawing a budget, an organisation should set up the objectives first, and then base on the current and future situation to make assumption and forecast if necessary.

Ricky also shared his view on the frequent asked questions by the Audit Commission, including the overestimate audience number, questioning the procurement procedures and economic benefit. Ricky explained that Audit Commission is a government department, they have to deal with different kind of projects and not necessarily familiar with the arts industry. Therefore, he believed it is beneficial to both parties, to explain more on the project objectives and limitation. For example, there should be evidence and counting method provided in order to support the given audience number.

As a final note, Ricky encouraged colleagues in the arts industry to work together and execute discipline on their financial management. If all organisations could keep a good financial record, it will increase the credibility of the whole industry. Funder and donor will then willing to invest more resources and it will benefit not only the industry but also the arts and cultural development of a city.

Once again, we are thankful to Ricky and all participants making their time for this event. Please stay tuned for upcoming HKAAA 19/20 Event Series!

2. The venue was packed with enthusiastic participants.

4. A participant asked whether she should assume an optimistic audience figure in a grant application. Ricky suggested she could also put some conditions to back up her assumption, such as GDP and per capita consumption.
