“Arts Administrator 101” Series
25/11/2019

As the local arts and culture scene has flourished in the recent years, arts administrators face more challenges than ever and often take multiple roles with limited resources and training. Our long-running “Arts Administrator 101” Series lets you acquire the practical skills you need from seasoned arts administrators.

Arts Ecology is our theme for “Arts Administrator 101” Series in 2019/20. We invited three veteran arts administrators to cover the following topics respectively: Community Arts Engagement in Design Thinking, A Conceptual Framework for Fundraising on the Arts, and Curating New Media Arts Programme. Through inspecting these hot topics in the industry, we aim to help participants establish the concepts of arts ecology in multiple perspectives.

Co-organizer: Hong Kong Design Centre

Design Thinking is a process of creative problem solving, with an emphasis to focus on the people they are creating for. Design thinking has been increasingly embraced by the world of business, social creative industry and education over the last decades. If the model is adaptable into different business, can we use it to design our community arts programme?

HKAAA is happy to have Ms. Sam Lam, Director of Business Development & Projects of Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), to kick off our 2019/20 “Arts Administrator 101 Series”. Sam will lead the workshop and go through the design thinking process with the participants, together exploring the possibilities of community arts.

Sam has over 18 years of experience in public relations, media, branding and curating and managing arts and cultural projects. Since joining HKDC in 2014, Sam mainly focus working on the flagship programmes of HKDC, including #ddHK, city and community programmes of Business of Design Week (BODW).

Fundraising plays a fundamental role in obtaining resources to achieve artistic goals. In Hong Kong, there are different ways to raise funds - the government body, trusts and foundations, business sector and the public. Fundraising is about building relationships and telling a good story. When facing a potential funder/ donor, what language and tactacts should we use to increase the possibility of getting funded?

In the second episode of 2019/20  “Arts Administrator 101 Series”, we have Ms. Vivien Lee, an experienced arts administrator, to explain to us what is a conceptual framework for fundraising.

The definition of new and emerging technologies constantly shift with time. New media arts appear when contemporary artists chose to use the latest media and technology as a medium of their work.

New media introduces a new way to create and to present, re-defining the relationship between the artist, the artwork and the viewer. The fast development of the internet also changes people’s conception of time and space. In this context, new media arts become ever-changing with a complex modes of expression.

In the last episode of 2019/20 “Arts Administrator 101 Series”, Ms. Joel Kwong, an experienced media arts curator and the Programme Director of Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, will introduce us to the realm of new media arts and share her experience on curating and programming with us.
