“Meet the Arts Leaders” Series: Mr. Alex Cheung
HKAAA is very grateful to have Mr Alex Cheung from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to be our first MTAL speaker. Alex has experience in a wide range of projects, including venue establishment, to arts festival production.
Government bodies usually position and operate differently than other arts companies. Mr Cheung will talk about how he leads his team to develop artistic programmes. He would also share the most interesting and challenging parts in his career, as well as how he sees himself as a seasoned arts administrator.
Since 2017, HKAAA has organised “Meet the Arts Leaders” (MTAL) series and has invited outstanding arts leaders as our speakers, including Ms Helen Ng, Mr K.B. Chan, and Mr Michael MacLeod.

Gala Performances of the Competition and Festival
There will be six Gala Performances in these series of events featuring:
• Invited artists such as the first prize winners of major international competitions in piano and in violin
• Two world-class guitarists
• The past four first prize winners of our Competition, plus the new fifth one to be announced, plus the prize giving ceremony
• A performance by the Logos Quartet
• Performances by five jury members in a solo piano recital and an evening of four piano concertos with the Orchestra of the Competition

Design Trust offers grants to individual designers, curators, collectives and non-profit organisations for projects and activities that are relevant to various design disciplines. These grants support projects relevant to the context and content of Hong Kong and the wider Greater Bay Area. The Greater Bay Area comprises of the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and the nine municipalities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing in Guangdong Province. DESIGN TRUST FEATURE GRANTS foster cross-disciplinary projects focusing on the Greater Bay Area. Projects awarded have a wide reaching audience and maybe sited in an exhibition or biennale venue with international recognition and standing. This Feature grant supports international exchanges between a Hong Kong or China based collective with an international renowned cultural institution. The grant aims to excel, share and build new knowledge and unique positions on the value of design.
DESIGN TRUST SEED GRANTS foster a culture of experimentation, testing and sharing. This grant is awarded to individuals seeking to kick start a meaningful and intellectual project with social, educational, economical or environmental impact for communities. Seed Grants may also be awarded for applicants who have a project in the pipeline that needs additional resources to complete the project. To further continue the mission of supporting emerging designers, and young scholars, Design Trust highly encourages applicants from Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area region to apply for this grant to support projects showcasing work at international exhibition venues, attendance at an international symposium conference for a paper presentation or international biennales or design festivals to showcase prototypes, conference paper or works relevant to architecture, graphic, industrial or emerging design fields.
Professional Attachment at Classical:NEXT 2020

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) collaborates with Classical:NEXT, the global gathering for all art music professionals, for the first time to launch the “Professional Attachment at Classical:NEXT 2020” (the Attachment Programme). The Attachment Programme provides an opportunity to local performing arts administration talents to further develop their professional skills, expertise and network. It is particularly looking for arts administrators, and practitioners with experiences in music event production, in the music sector.

The Attachment Programme will offer one attachment place for about 12 weeks on a full-time basis from March to May 2020 at Classical:NEXT. The selected candidate will mainly participate in the preparation, coordination and implementation of Classical:NEXT, including its promotion & marketing strategy, programme planning, and Classical:NEXT events. During the attachment period, the selected candidate will mainly station at the office of Classical:NEXT in Berlin, Germany while he/she is required to coordinate the related events in Rotterdam, the Netherlands during Classical:NEXT 2020. Applicant must have at least 3 years of paid work experience in the performing arts, especially in music sector. 

A bursary of HK$81,000 will be provided for the successful candidate to cover accommodation in Germany, local transportation and subsistence in Germany and the Netherlands during the placement period and one economy class return flight ticket (Hong Kong to-and-from Germany).

Interested practitioners are advised to refer to the application guidelines and form. Both documents can now be obtained from the HKADC Administration Office (10/F, 1063 King’s Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong) or downloaded from the HKADC website: www.hkadc.org.hk. Applications must be submitted and deposited in the collection box at the HKADC Administration Office by 6:00pm on 8 November 2019 (Friday) the latest. Applications submitted by post must be postmarked on or before the deadline. Late submission or submission by fax or email will not be processed.

【HKAPA Fall Performances 2019 — Brighten Up Our Lives with Performing Arts】
This fall, we will once again present to you an exciting line-up of performing arts programmes, including a verbatim theatre BU21 which tells stories of six survivors of an imagined terrorist attack, three dance pieces choreographed for the School of Dance Fall Performances by renowned local and international dance artists, musical The Woman in Kenzo depicting Hong Kong in the 70s presented by Drama faculty and students in collaboration with veteran composer Leon Ko and lyricist Chris Shum, the Academy Symphony Orchestra Concert conducted by Dean of Music Professor Sharon Choa, and three Cantonese opera excerpts of varied styles in the Gongs and Drums series.

Members of the production team for most of the above productions are students and faculty from the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts. We hope to bring the audience performances from different genres and styles. Performing arts have always given us energy and hope, we wish they would do the same for you all.

Fine Art Asia 2019 and Ink Asia 2019 to lead the peak season for art in Hong Kong
4-7 October 2019

Cultural landscape of the modern Taiwanese design and lifestyle
ONE MAP|Taiwan Design Arts Exhibition will be held from 12 to 20 October at Parallel Space, Tai Nam Street, Sham Shui Po. This exhibition is a curatorial representation of the harmonious and sustainable relationship between nature, art and design. Taiwan - crowned the Treasure Island of the East - is blessed with unique geography of mountain ranges, forests and ocean with thriving ecology. Tracing the island’s terrain, the exhibition explores the birth of emerging brands and aesthetics pursuit in a total of 9 groups of creative participants with nearly 50 exhibits. Through multi-sensory immersion, it charts the unified cultural landscape and creative map of modern Taiwanese design and lifestyle. There will also be three One Map Classes organized to set an exchange platform among designers from Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong International Literary Festival (HKILF), founded in 2001, is an annual event held over ten days in autumn, featuring established and emerging writers from around the world in a programme that includes discussions, literary lunches and dinners, workshops, lectures, debates, book signings, and readings. This year, the Hong Kong International Literary Festival unveils an outstanding programme today for its 19th edition, featuring Markus Zusak, Pico Iyer, Jennifer 8. Lee and Booker Long List author, John Lanchester. From 1 to 10 November, the Festival will focus on themes of identity, migration and dystopia across a wide range of mediums including readings, workshops and performance.

The Life of Chen Gexin, renowned composer for many Chinese classic oldies, is a sad song of a genius in a chaotic time.
