【Exclusive for HKAAA Members / Volunteers】In Conversation with the Team of War Horse
About War Horse
Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, the National Theatre of Great Britain’s Tony Award-winning production of War Horse is coming to Hong Kong for the first time ever. Hailed by Time Magazine as ‘a landmark theatre event,’ this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. An unforgettable theatre experience, ‘not to be missed’ (Chicago Tribune).

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, Young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the calvary and shipped from England to France. He is soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

【Highlight Recap】(Rerun) “Arts Administrator 101” Series – Xiqu Centre Guided Tour & Dialogue with Mr Rae Wu
Following an overwhelming public response, the “Arts Administrator 101” Series – Xiqu Centre Guided Tour & Dialogue with Mr Rae Wu was successfully held on 27 April 2019 (Sat). Supplemented with innovative multimedia elements, the approximately 1-hour guided tour helped participants to discover the fascinating facts about the culture and stories behind the art of xiqu. Also, by visiting the main facilities of Xiqu Centre, including the Atrium, Tea House Theatre and Grand Theatre, participants might know more about the architectural features and design concepts behind the world-class arts venue – Xiqu Centre.

It was a great honor for the Association to invite Mr Rae Wu, Senior Manager, Technical and Productions (Performing Arts), West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, as our guest speaker. The conversation was very meaningful and inspiring. Mr Wu first intorduced the future development plans of Xiqu Centre and other venues in West Kowloon Cultural District. He also shared his invaluable experience of overseas research and fieldtrips involved. Through the cultural exchange with different architects and designers, with many times of professional field testing, Mr Wu and his team have devoted a lot of efforts to ensure that all venues in WKCDA could provide high-quality of audio-visual enjoyment, so as to foster more local and overseas audiences to appreciate the art of xiqu. Afterwards, in the Dialogue Session, Mr Wu had an interactive discussion with the participants. Both sides gave a wonderful speech and the content was very fruitful, which really benefited our participants.

HKAAA would like to thanks the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority once again, especially to those who work so tirelessly to ensure that the event runs smoothly, allowing all participants to have a nice day to remember!

The 9th Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival
Words have limits. Body language, on the other hand, can express ideas through its inherent energy and vivaciousness. Over the past nine years, Deaf films have changed the landscape of Hong Kong movie-viewing and cinematography. The 9th Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival (HKIDFF) has gathered different kinds of Deaf films from all over the world, focusing on Deaf films by Deaf artists, about Deaf stories, developing discussion and promotion of Deaf culture. Looking at the history of the Deaf in the past, looking at the Deaf, present and future, we set the theme for HKIDFF in 2019 to be Sign Language Education and Film Empowerment.

Sign language is not just a tool for communication, but rather a carrier for emotion, stories, culture and imagination of the Deaf. Based on sign language and Deaf culture, Deaf films tell Deaf’s own stories though expressive body movements and creative filmmaking, speak out for the Deaf who were labeled, marginalized and ignored by the hearing world.

We sincerely invite you join us for this annual Deaf film festival from 3 May to 5 May 2019!

【HKAPA】 The 35th Anniversary Academy Festival Presents: “Mnemonic” – Director Roy Szeto Talks about Memory
“Mnemonic”, according to dictionary, means “1. Assisting or intended to assist the memory / 2. Of memory.” So what is “memory”? According to Roy Szeto, Director of Mnemonic to be presented by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts next week, memories are entwined with history on various levels, “People today are living under many layers of protective shields. To avoid being harmed, we cocoon ourselves within the false image that we want to present to the world. Subconsciously we create some memories that we wish to remember. In other words, we rarely, if not never, live as our true self. Being brave enough to expose some wounds is already a huge leap forward. We should live the moment, so that we will not fade away in history!”

Come watch the play and explore “memories” together!

Miranda Chin Dance Company 30th Anniversary Performance: Miranda Chin’s Martial Arts Dance
“Miranda Chin’s Martial Arts Dance Series” is a local production that stresses both traditional interpretation and contemporary creation. From 2001 to 2011, Artistic Director of the Company, Dr. Miranda Chin, found inspirations of the series from her visits to Mount Wudang and Mount Qing Cheng, and her experiences visiting scholars at Beijing Sports University and interviews with masters of Tai Chi and Martial Arts.

“Miranda Chin’s Martial Arts Dance” transforms Chinese classics, with the performances by Tai Chi Masters accompanied by live music and dances, to demonstrate the secrets of Tai Chi philosophy, displaying the cultural essence of dances such as “the Highest State of Good-Water” from “Tao De Jing” (the Book of The Placid and Contented Nature), “Tai Chi boxing, Tai Chi swordplay”, “Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of Huangdi)”, “Yijing, Eight Trigrams”, and“the Onesness of Heaven and Humanity, Tai Chi Pushing Hands and Jing Qi Shen” from the perceptives of Chinese philosophy, literature, medicine and “Shu Shu”(Numerological Arts for Fortune-Telling).
