【Exclusive for HKAAA Members】(Rerun) “Arts Administrator 101” Series – Xiqu Centre Guided Tour & Dialogue with Mr Rae Wu
Due to the overwhelming response last time, Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association (HKAAA) is honoured to rerun the Xiqu Centre Guided Tour with West Kowloon Cultural District Authority!

Xiqu Centre Guided Tour
Did you know that Cantonese opera performers always greet each other with “Good morning” no matter what time of day they meet? Or that in traditional tea houses balcony seats cost more than those closer to the stage? To find out why, join our Xiqu Centre Guided Tour and learn about our new venue and the rich history of the art of xiqu. The 60-minute tour, conducted in Cantonese, help you explore the Xiqu Centre facilities, learn about the architectural and design features, and discover fascinating facts about the culture and stories behind the art of xiqu. Tours are supplemented with multimedia elements and are perfect for newcomers to the art of xiqu. (Please note, as the backstage area is an active working zone it is not part of the guided tour.)

The dialogue session will be a sharing of WKCDA Technical and Production team’s work, especially on the technical aspect consideration in project building of the few significant West Kowloon theatres, such as Xiqu Centre, Freespace and other future venues. Mr Rae Wu will also share the overseas research and fieldtrips involved in the past, plus how they took the feedbacks from the industry to the design and building of theatres.

Until 22 April – Noguchi for Danh Vo: Counterpoint
On view at the M+ Pavilion, Noguchi for Danh Vo: Counterpoint is a dialogue between Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) and Vietnamese Danish artist Danh Vo (born 1975) through the forms and concepts in their bodies of work.

The exhibition presents a range of works by Noguchi that spans almost five decades and includes works on paper, industrial design objects, and sculptures in stone, metal, and other materials, demonstrating his transcultural sources of inspiration. Noguchi’s work is placed in conversation with recent works by Vo—sculptures from ancient Rome, and material fragments from modern America and contemporary China—illustrating Vo’s appropriation of historical and personal narratives from different contexts.

CCDC 40th Dance Season Opening Programme: Winterreise · The Rite of Spring
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of its founding, CCDC will raise the curtain of the Company’s anniversary season with the Winterreise · The Rite of Spring, a signature piece by Helen Lai, the city’s acclaimed iconic Hong Kong choreographer. Born into a musical family, Helen Lai has decoded the two music masterpieces and further encoded into the new context. Working in close partnership with the excellent team, the performance intertwines composite rhythms with emotional dance to immerse audience in a sensory journey of poetic and tempestuous hallucination.

Winterreise
Inspired by Franz Schubert’s Winterreise in 1827, Helen’s choreography first premiered in 1984. The piece describes the inner journey of a wayfarer travelling alone on the wintry road. This new version of 2019 features live performance by noted pianist Colleen Lee and bass-baritone Apollo Wong.

The Rite of Spring
1913. The legendary opening night of The Rite of Spring.
Choreographer, performers, audience, tussle of power.
A three-way tug-of-war, of conflicts and dependencies
Helen Lai’s Rite of Spring premiered at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall in 1992 and made its debut in Taiwan at Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in 1994. This homecoming production is accompanied by two pianists, Helen Cha and Colleen Lee

【HKAPA 35th Anniversary Academy Festival Opening Performance: School of Dance Spring Performances 3 – 4 May】
The annual Spring Performances by School of Dance is a celebration of the students, faculty and guest artists’ commitment, dedication and passion in dancing. The four new premieres created by international and local choreographers: Jonathan Watkins, Xing Liang, Rick Nodine and Anh Ngoc Nguyen are various in style, quality and theme, yet they all share one essence – the manifestation of the relationship between unity and diversity. The 59 dance artists, each with distinctive individualities, will immerse the audiences to the true power of dance, while reflecting their expression of self, society and dance in their performances. They are given a goal to take the audiences to a place beyond itself where dreams or imaginations lie – a world shared by creator, interpreter and most certainly by the people who come to see it. From a True Story – Christian Rizzo
This June, West Kowloon and Le French May co-present the Hong Kong debut of French choreographer Christian Rizzo’s acclaimed dance work “From a True Story (d’après une histoire vraie)” at our new performing arts venue, Freespace.

Described as a “contemporary vision of a folk dance on drums” the piece incorporates eight dancers and two live drummers – Didier Ambact and King Q4 – who drive the dance with repetitive, earthy, tribal rhythms, creating a zone of tension with the dancers that lies somewhere between dialogue and battle. Created in 2013, “From a True Story” is Rizzo’s most well-known and widely toured work, and one that strikes at the core of human experience. Watch trailer: https://vimeo.com/254995810

To accompany the performance, Rizzo will also host a public seminar and professional dance workshops. Details to be announced.

HK Dance “Red Poppies” (4th Run)
Adapted from the eponymous novel, which won China’s most prestigious book prize established by writer Mao Dun, the grand dance drama Red Poppies draws from folk dance traditions of the Tibetan region where the book is set. Featuring Tibetan music and singing as well as colourful tribal costumes, Red Poppies is a testament to the changes of time, the destruction of old world orders and the coming of a new age. It is also a meditation on karma, on good and evil through the Tibetan culture and traditions.
