HKAPA School of Drama: The Adding Machine – coming next week!
If you were given the choice of enjoying “freedom without boundaries” or “security within a system”, which would you choose?

“As human beings, we all live in various systems: economy is one, institutionalised religion is another. Systems are the embodiments of a world of binary settings. They distinguish us from 'good' to 'bad' and from 'right' to 'wrong' – but are there any other settings that can possibly go beyond such dichotomy? If so, how can they inspire and create meanings for humanity?”, asks the director Alex Cheung.

“The Adding Machine”’s protagonist Mr Zero is an accountant who remains “seated all day to add up digits”. For 25 years, he has been doing the same work over and over again and never takes a day off, until one day he is fired when his boss replaces him with a newly launched adding machine. Infuriated, Mr Zero kills his boss and is sentenced to death. He is later brought back to life and comes across interesting people from different times. By telling the story of Mr Zero, the play exposes how man are enslaved and turned oblivion by the systems that surround us…

Our School of Drama students are now in full-force rehearsing, hoping to bring you all splendid and moving performances! Join us at the theatre from 28 November to 1 December and experience all the bizarre encounters with Mr Zero!

M+ Talk Series: Negotiating Access and Preservation in the Contemporary Museum
On 6 December, join us to hear Christel Pesme, Senior Conservator at M+, examine the relationship between the notions of access and preservation in museums. Placing the discussion in the broader context of consumer culture in contemporary society, Pesme explores how the two seemingly antagonistic ideas can reinforce each other. By addressing sustainability and the cultural commons, she encourages the audience to reflect on the care of objects, people, and society as a whole.

Come Across
CCDC's new production in December: Come Across – a dynamic and captivating double bill from Hong Kong and Korea – Nuts’hell by acclaimed Hong Kong choreographer Noel Pong and Jangdan by multitalented Korean choreographer Kim Jaeduk.

Noel’s new piece Nuts’hell is based on the controversial Rosenhan Experiment, depicting an absurd world where the boundary between normal and abnormal is vague, and “labels” overrides rationality. Kim Jaeduk's new work, Jangdan, originates from the Korean word 장단, a traditional repetitive percussive rhythm that creates emotions with tempo and volume. This innovative piece blends traditional music with Taekkyeon martial arts and contemporary dance to create an irresistible vibe on the stage!

A cinematic musical journey of Hong Kong! “Hong Kong Episodes” will be presented in January 2019
Explore the unique charm of Hong Kong on a cinematic musical journey filled with intrigue! Eight musical sections developed through four facets of Hong Kong during the course of a virtual day: its cosmopolitan cityscape; fast-paced lifestyle; avenues for spiritual retreat; and colourful heritage and culture. Savour the changing sensibilities of the city in the ambience of video and instrumental music.

With new scores written collaboratively by Fung Lam, the youngest Chinese composer to be commissioned by the BBC, and Teriver Cheung, a stand-out guitarist on the international jazz scene, and performed by the fine jazz quartet alongside top chamber players from the Hong Kong Contemporary Music Group, the refreshing jazz-classical cross-over piece is accompanied by architect Anthony Lai’s original video images, the result is an amazing tapestry of original music and visuals weaving a lasting impression of Hong Kong.

JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power will bring Hong Kong Episodes back home this January 2019, showcasing at Tai Kwun in Central. It was premiered at the World Cultures Festival 2015 presented by LCSD of Hong Kong, and showcased at Hong Kong Music Series in London in 2017 presented by HKADC.
