In his staging, director Terence Chang wants the audience to consider how, in a society where resources are scarce, a safety net can be put in place for everyone.

HKAPA School of Drama: The Adding Machine
Have you ever imagined yourself being replaced by a machine? Have you ever thought whether your contribution to the society matters?

Mr Zero, the protagonist of The Adding Machine, is an accountant who remains “seated all day to add up digits” and a dedicated employee of his company who never takes a day off, until one day he is fired when his boss replaces him with a newly launched adding machine. Infuriated, he kills his boss and is sentenced to death, but is later brought back to life and encounters interesting people from different times in his afterlife journey…

Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine was written at a time when mechanical applications gained unprecedented popularity in the 20s; Academy alumnus director Alex Cheung digs into a similar theme in today’s age of artificial intelligence. By portraying the “one-dimensional” character Mr Zero and taking the audience through his choices, the director poses a question: “In the era of technology, do we still have a choice?”

Another Music in Anticlockwise – Visual Music Encounter
10 – 12.1.2019(Thurs – Sat)
Multi-media Theatre, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity

Our steps are hurried, as is the wheel of time. Every forward movement happens like lightning. But what if we take a step back: A cross-media art experience interweaving media art, music performance and space design, deconstructing “old” contexts and creating “new” material; from the first string quartet piece: Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 1, evolving into a futuristic electronic sound experience. Using “now” as a time tunnel, we travel between the past and the future, contemplating on the constant and the inconstant.

On 10 November Saturday evening and 11 November Sunday afternoon at the HKCC Grand Theatre will be the grand performance of a splendid crossover of symphonic orchestra and Peking Opera. The performance of Sunlight after Snowfall marks the first ever collaboration between the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and internationally acclaimed Taiwanese conductor Chien Wen-Pin. Nikkei Asian Review commended Sunlight after Snowfall has the ring of Shakespeare's poetic language and its themes “echo in many of Shakespeare's works, and especially in the Henriad series in which Sir John Falstaff's disdain for fighting in the name of a ruler is a key idea.”

A special package discount of these two performances is now available. You can enjoy a 20% discount when you purchase standard tickets for MADE in Taiwan and Sunlight after Snowfall in one transaction. Do not miss this great opportunity!
