HKAAA Updates

Written by British writer William Golding and published in 1954, the novel Lord of the Flies reveals to us a group of children, in the midst of a wartime evacuation, stranded on an uninhabited island where they try to establish the order of life. Threatened by death, their instinct for survival gradually turns the island into a battlefield of power, leading them into the dark side of human nature. The play extends the story to a point in time when a few of the children become grown-ups and find themselves in a heap of ruins resulting from an air raid of another war. The ambience of the wasteland is reminiscent of the days on the island when they got into fighting, costing the lives of some little friends. Overwhelmed with grief and perplexed by what they have done, they fall into a retrospective journey of the past…

M+ Screenings: Beneath the Pavement
M+ Screenings: Beneath the Pavement is a series of seven screenings that builds cinematic dialogue between French and Hong Kong moving image works produced in the years around May 1968, a turbulent period of social unrest marked by strikes, protests, and clashes with authority. These shorts, features, television pieces, and experimental films explore the formal and conceptual shifts in cinematic practice occurring in two distinct regional contexts and offer a new understanding of the creative energies and motivations behind an eventful period whose significance extends both on- and off-screen. The screenings include the Hong Kong premiere of Actua1 / Le révélateur by Philippe Garrel, and the Asian premiere of Détruisez-vous by Serge Bard.

To Liv(e)
Evans Chan
Hong Kong / 1992 / Col / 106' / In Cantonese and English with Chinese and English subtitles
Cast: Lindzay Chan, Josephine Koo, Anthony Wong

Of Evans Chan’s directorial debut, long considered an underground classic, The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “To Liv(e) was inspired by actress Liv Ullmann’s 1990 visit to Hong Kong, where she decried the forced deportation of Vietnamese refugees. This, coupled with the Tiananmen Square crackdown the year before, contributes to a dark cloud of apprehension over the British colony… With a painter's eye in capturing the bohemian fringe of the Hong Kong art scene, and the mature voice of a seasoned filmmaker, Chan examines love, family, and the fate of Hong Kong, and the culture clash between East and West with equal depth and assurance.”

Best Actress & Best Supporting Actress Award, 29th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards
Best Actress Award, Portugal Sinatra Festival 1991
Special Jury Prize, Singapore Film Festival 1991

Screening with

Sharon Liu
3′ 29" / In English with Chinese and English subtitles
“There are many things we cannot choose in life, no one can choose their parents. You have to learn to love them before knowing them.”
My graduation film is about my personal feelings to Hong Kong and its complicated relationship with China. It expresses what I really want to say and feel at the age of 23, that I love not just my birth place Hong Kong but my country as well.
