Escape from World Wide Web, to define WHO – WHEN – WHERE in real life

Senior dancer of the Hong Kong Dance Company Chen Rong premieres his new work “But Now We See” at the 8/F Platform. He wonders why people don’t meet face to face these days, why they talk without opening their mouths… Are smartphones smart? Let him answer with moves combining traditional Chinese ethnic dance and street dance.
Dripping by Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company from Taiwan is inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s novel Nausea. It expresses the impermanence of life in a dance duet accompanied by a live jazz performance and the magical percussion sound of water dripping.

It Begins with A Story: A symposium on artists, writers, and periodicals in Asia
Organised by Asia Art Archive in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong, the symposium explores how periodicals have fostered conversations around art and emergent forms of visuality in twentieth-century Asia.
Free and open to all with registration: http://aaa.org.hk/en/Symposium2018

Date: 11-13 January 2018
Venue: The University of Hong Kong
Language: Cantonese, English and Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation provided

Periodicals have been more than just platforms or sites for artistic experimentation and exhibition; they have themselves shaped and staged them. In so doing, periodicals have played a defining role in forming diverse publics for art in Asia.

The papers presented in the symposium explore periodicals in relation to emerging practices that cut across genres, new nomenclatures and aesthetic propositions, verbal and visual manifestos, the production of alternative publics and communities for art, and other topics.

Speakers include Charles Esche, director of Van Abbemuseum and co-founder of Afterall; Li Xianting, Beijing-based independent critic and curator; Phoebe Scott, curator of National Gallery Singapore; Michael Erdman, curator of Turkish and Turkic Collections at The British Library, and more.

The Fringe Club -【PASSENGERS' ANECDOTES】From the Edge of Central Journeying through the Forgotten
A night at the turn of autumn, few artists convened in Central and tried walking up and up in pursuit of the land of unknown.

If it were a boat, where would it have led us to? Through observing, documenting and experiencing their residence, three artists – Chan Cho Kiu, Jess Lau Ching Wa, and Yip Kai Chun – refresh their understanding of and feelings for the Fringe Club, as well as its surroundings and histories. The journey they have embarked on inspires different series of installation works, illustrating these sites and scenes then and now.

Chan Cho Kiu is fond of getting lost. For months, she has been observing the vitality and industry roaming up and down the slopes in Central. Jess Lau Ching Wa focuses on the memories of urban dwellers and attempts to re-create what was once owned and is now lost. Yip Kai Chun traces and unravels the changes and feelings in a centenarian’s life. Placed all over the boat are objects, texts, sounds, images that seek to pause passersby on their way.

Docked on the edge of Central, the passenger freighter used to transport ice, milk and meat and was home for its workers. Three artists are invited to have a 5-month residence at the venue. Through their lens and senses, they integrate their works with the surroundings to unearth the forgotten, inspire curiosity and build connections.
