Guided tour for HKAAA members/volunteers on "Immersive Theatre: Lingering in Time"

M+ Screenings: Stillness in Motion - Tickets on sale now
From 24 to 26 November, “M+ Screenings: Stillness in Motion” explores contemporary cinema’s relationship to Asian philosophy and ink art. Drawing together films from across Asia, the programme presents five screenings of minimalist, poetic, and contemplative works that are highly evocative, intensifying a sense of temporality over action.

The screenings open with Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s ravishing wuxia drama “The Assassin”, which tells the story of the young heroine Nie Yinniang, who must choose between love and duty. Also featured is the Hong Kong debut of Yang Fudong’s epic five-part film “Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest”, first presented in its entirety at the 2007 Venice Biennale. A modern take on a famous third-century Chinese fable, the film portrays a group of young Chinese urbanites caught in the crossfire of old and new worlds who seek alternative ways of living. The box office is now open; get your tickets now!

This programme is organised in response to the exhibition “The Weight of Lightness: Ink Art at M+”, now on view at the M+ Pavilion.

Winning entry of Hong Kong Dance Awards 2007

“A powerful, full-length work based on the life of Shostakovich, combined dance with theatre and video to striking effect.” – South China Morning Post
It’s Top-notch Chinese choreographer Helen Lai and veteran theatre actor Lee Chun-chow decipher the music of Shostakovich together. Don’t miss out on the return of this seminal classic!
Regarded as a music giant during the Soviet period, Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was a pioneer and spiritual leader of the music circle, giving voice to the revolutionary socialism at that time. Unfortunately, under Stalin’s orthodoxy, he became the enemy of the people and faced harsh political persecution. Feigning compliance with the government, Shostakovich embedded his resentment and rebellion against the government into his music.

Inspired by Testimony, the controversial memoirs of Shostakovich, Helen Lai presents an unprecedented fusion of dance, music, moving image and theatre. The Hong Kong outstanding actor  Lee Chun-chow returns to join in this pioneering dance theatre, playing the Russian composer, Shakespeare’s tragic characters as well as funny man in Chaplin’s slapstick style of silent movies, weaving between dance, music and drama.

No Past, No Future
“Make it count!” – Laurence Loh
How often have you heard or used the phrase “Let him think that it’s his idea and you will win support for your cause”? This is covert subversion.
When you march in the streets and occupy a public space, you are viewed as troublemakers trying to influence public perceptions through airtime. This is overt subversion.
Let’s think of heritage conservation as a critical subversive activity.  Which approach will you take, covert or overt?
Laurence Loh, renowned as the “Heritage Crusader” of Penang, Malaysia, has always been looking for covert ways to engage and save Penang’s heritage for future generations.
His milestone restoration project, the Blue Mansion, received the UNESCO’s Most Excellent Project in the Asia Pacific Heritage Award in 2000 and kick-started the path towards the World Heritage Listing of George Town. Riding on the awareness it has created, now conservation is a mainstream activity in Penang.
A new model of subversion can be found in an amorphous advocacy group called the Penang Forum, a loose coalition of individuals and organisations, and has certain impact on political agendas. How does it work?
