  • Exclusive guided tour for HKAAA members/volunteers-Microwave International New Media Arts Festival 2017

About the Exhibition
With the theme of "Cyberia", the 21st Microwave is having its grand opening on 12nd October this year. In the time of NOW, we move on after the 20th anniversary celebration, to reveal something at the moment, something we want to proceed and respond to the current world. In Microwave 2017 - we are looking at the element of live - everything could be live, FB live, live coding, generative video/animation, electronic music and light play. We form a “Cyberia”, the land to inspire and to experience “live”, a place to redefine our lives.

Arts and Cultural Management 101
In recent years, the development of the local arts and culture scene has flourished, with the completion of cultural venues integrating art and conservation such as the heritage buildings in Central, the establishment of major international exhibitions, art fairs and auctions, and the use of arts and cultural elements in commercial institutions, shopping malls and hotels. The new performing and visual arts venues set to open in the West Kowloon Cultural District will also increase the need for talent in the areas of cultural management and arts administration.

These talks invite practitioners in the local arts and culture industries to share their experience and to explore the qualities, passions and academic qualifications required for a career in the arts and culture field.

The Remarkable People Series – Naked Dialogue - No Past, No Future
“Death may be inevitable, but the death of the Singapore cemetery is not.”— Kevin Tan (Professor of Law, NUS, Conservationist & Music Critic)

If you want to voice your dissent against government’s decision, what can you do without taking to the street or breaking the law?

Hong Kong is often referred to as the twin city of Singapore. When facing similar political challenges, how do we establish a legitimate platform for policy discourse and civil action?

Back in 2010, the Singapore government decided to exhume a chunk of Bukit Brown Cemetery and to build a major highway through it. Kevin Tan, who has spent over 20 years advocating for political awareness and heritage conservation, helped to convince the authorities to fund a thorough documentation of the graves. He was joined by a group of conservationists and the campaign on Bukit Brown has grown into a movement ever since.

Can Hong Kong get some insights from him?

This dialogue is to explore ways to communicate legitimate concerns of public policies; also touch on heritage conservation, enjoyment of music and Singaporean life-style.

  • Kevin Tan (Professor of Law, Conservationist & Music Critic | Singapore)
  • Benny Chia (Founder of the Fringe Club | Hong Kong)

DUDAMEL X BEETHOVEN “Changing Young Lives, One Note At A Time” Forum
How can music be a vehicle for social change? How can social and education initiatives wield the power of music in and for their community?

The Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust will conduct a forum with the theme of CHANGING YOUNG LIVES, ONE NOTE AT A TIME, running parallel with the concert series featuring the world-famous Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and its charismatic conductor Gustavo Dudamel in early November. The orchestra’s members, along with more than 787,000 children across Venezuela, have all been nurtured under El Sistema, a pioneering social initiative which provides opportunities for inclusion and growth for the most needy children through music participation.

Keynote speaker Mr. Eduardo Méndez, Executive Director of El Sistema, along with specialists across the music, education, and community sectors of Hong Kong, will share their insight and experiences into how music contributes to the common good – from an individual level to society at large, and how community initiatives in music can make an impact on the Hong Kong community.
