Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association Career Day 2017
Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association Career Day 2017 was held successfully on March 11 at The Work Project.
 
HKAAA Career Day 2017 was an informative based activity designed to provide different information about art administration to participants. 3 career talks had been delivered by distinguished guest speakers, and about 150 participants had attended for the talks. Thank you for the participation and support!
 
We were delighted to have 8 prestigious arts administrators to share their views and experience as well as the future and opportunities in the profession on that day. They were Professor Tseng Sun-man, Co-Programme Leader of EMA(AME), The Education University of Hong Kong; Ms Heidi Lee Oi Yee, Associate Dean, Cheung Kong School of Art & Design,Shantou University; Ms Orlean Lai, Independent Curator & Creative Producer; Ms Christy Lee Shuk Kwan, Programme Manager, Chung Ying Theatre Company (HK) Limited; Mr Dominique Chan, Head of Gallery & Exhibition, Asia Society Hong Kong; Ms Keri Towler, Senior Registrar, M Plus Museum Limited, Ms Karina Jagudina, Conservator, Painting, M Plus Museum Limited, Ms Jofan Huang, Conservator, Paper, M Plus Museum Limited.
 
In the morning, a public forum on cultural ecology was taken placed. New York, London, and Mainland cities had been used as example to examine how the cultural ecology of Hong Kong differs from those cities or countries. Ms Heidi Lee had shared her opinion on the difference in the mode of operation in art events between Hong Kong and China; Miss Orlean Lau and Ms Christy Lee had shared their experiences on Art promotion and management in Europe, in comparison to Hong Kong. The discussion had encouraged more critical review on Hong Kong cultural ecology, and also shed light on the career of an Art Administrators in both Hong Kong and other cities around the world.
 
In the afternoon, 2 sessions on curation and museum management were taken place. Mr Dominique Chan had shared his experience as a curator in Hong Kong, and Ms Keri Towler, Ms Karina Jagudina and Ms Jofan Huang had talked about the career as a conservator in museum. They revealed the career working in museums and exhibitions involves a wide variety of job duties that require the candidates to be passionate, and with strong knowledge background. They had also stressed the importance to be involved in an internship in order to be start your career in this industry.
 
Thank you for joining “Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association Career Day 2017”. On-location job application and interview will be provided in Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association Recruitment Day 2017, which will be held later this year. Professional Attachment at Summerhall, Edinburgh (Pilot Scheme) - Open for Application
Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) collaborates with the British Council and Summerhall of the UK for the first time to launch the ‘Professional Attachment at Summerhall, Edinburgh (Pilot Scheme)’. The Programme provides attachment opportunities to promising local arts practitioners, especially independent performing arts producers, with leadership potential to further develop their professional skills and network. It is now open for application.
 
The Programme will offer two attachment places for six weeks on a full-time basis from July to September 2017 at Summerhall. The selected candidates will actively participate in the areas of programme management, scheduling, production, artist liaison and marketing of performances and activities under the supervision of senior members at Summerhall during the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A bursary of HK$56,000 will be provided to each successful candidate to cover accommodation, transportation, subsistence during the placement period and one economy class return flight ticket.

HKDI CIMT Grand Opening
 
HKDI Centre of Innovative Material and Technology (CIMT) is established as a comprehensive material archive and interactive learning platform to facilitate the exchange of material knowledge and associated applications amongst students, faculty, designers and manufacturers. The objective of CIMT is to connect the material industry and the world of design, stimulate new ideas, research and developments, cross-disciplinary projects, thereby inspiring the designs of tomorrow through the materials of today. Its collection ranges from the latest innovative, cross-industry materials from global suppliers, various manufacturing processes and inspired end products.

The Grand Opening of CIMT is scheduled on 7 April 2017. Throughout the period 15 March-30 April 2017, a series of events will be rolled out in celebration of the Grand Opening. These include themed exhibitions featuring the latest technology and material applications, seminars and workshops conducted by renowned artists, designers and media experts, open to participation by students, academics, industry and the general public.

Following his emotional letter to Hong Kong, Fragile Beauty, world-renowned Tibetan choreographer Sang Jijia has created a new work to examine the many faces of life. Sentimental Reality travels down the path of life, from the mundane to the monumental, facing life, death, and fate. Making this epic journey with Sang are dramaturg Tang Shu-wing, composer Dickson Dee, set designer Leo Cheung, costume designer Cindy Ho Pui-shan and lighting designer Low Shee Hoe. This will surely be the most magnificent work of the season.

「劇場中的文化差異:種族議題的藝術處理及處理藝術」研討會
(Chinese Version Only)
本港戲劇界別發展數十年,翻譯劇演出向來佔一重要席位。透過這扇窗,我們能體驗別國文化差異,擴闊國際視野。
 
歐美地區種族多元化,編劇編寫人物角色時,不時會出現不同種族,反映當地文化。處理涉及種族題材的劇本時,歐美劇場導演多按照劇本設定的角色種族選角,而不再以白人演繹黑人或亞洲人等角色。但華人或亞洲地區劇場的演員種族單一,呈現涉及不同種族的外國劇作時,如何不冒犯別國文化禁忌、而真實地呈現劇本內容,是一大挑戰。
 
各國文化存在差異,各地表演藝術的發展步伐難以一致,文化生態更迥然不同。以中英劇團即將上演的美國翻譯劇《谷爆笠水帶位員》(The Flick)為例,由華人演員演繹劇中非裔美籍人士一角時並無作特別化妝處理,以尊重不同種族。同樣的處境,數十年前的處理手法與今天的處理手法亦會由於各國文化生態轉變而有所不同,值得戲劇同業借鏡及反思。在劇場塑造角色時,如何做到像真之餘且能尊重別國文化?忠於原著、忠於角色的種族會否窒礙藝術創作?從形象塑造角色,會否構成種族、性別、年齡、殘疾歧視?藝術創作的尺度應如何釐定?版權代理作為中介人,能否減低版權持有人與藝團的磨擦?是次研討會將以此劇作引旨,與同業探討東西方劇場對種族處理的看法及須注意的文化禁忌。

Virtual Reality
VR stations will be available for festival goers to enjoy this new technology – Gear VR, VIVE and Oculus Rift headsets will be featured. An exciting variety of VR experiences will be available, including wonder.land, a VR music video inspired by Alice in Wonderland that brings participants into an immersive kaleidoscopic dreamscape.
 
New Media Arts
A series of interactive new media arts installations and audio-visual performances will be situated throughout the festival site. Installations include Resonance Aura IV, a kinetic light sculpture inspired by the mechanics of a gyroscope matched with the appearance of a time-machine.
 
Marketlab & Talks
Sónar+D celebrates the convergence of creativity, technology and culture, and offers a meeting point for people interested in these fields. The Sónar+D programme features keynote talks from industry experts, including world-renowned artist, programmer, designer and DJ Daito Manabe. Sónar+D also houses the MarketLab, which will exhibit new products, projects and prototypes from research centres, tech companies, creative studios and labs from around the world.
 
Workshops
Three fun and accessible workshops will be run during the day (no experience required): Learn to make a modular synth with Dirty Electronics and Polytik; Learn to make a solenoid acoustic tapper with Sound Swarm; and Hands on Arduino Introduction – learn to make a theremin-style instrument.
