Benny is the founder and director of the Fringe Club in Hong Kong. He started the Fringe Festival in 1983. Sixteen years later, he created the City Festival, an urban culture festival that provides a platform for community engagement, cultural discourse and international exchange. And by initiating a programme called Spotlight City, he has built networks with artists and cultural leaders in some 20 cities, from Vienna to Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City to Penang.
In his years as Artistic Director of the Fringe Club, Benny has scripted and produced dance theatre pieces, “Living History” shows and dramatizations of famous court cases; produced big-band jazz shows for the main stage at the Shanghai World Expo; and curated many art exhibitions, notably for the Hong Kong pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
He is a founding member of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association. Currently, he serves on several arts boards.
Honours he has received include the Bronze Bauhinia Star from the HKSAR Government, the Badge of Honour from the former Hong Kong Government, Best Arts Promoter from the Artists’ Guild, and Hero of Hong Kong from Time Out Magazine.
