Mr Timothy Calnin, Executive Director, Performing Arts of Sydney Opera House

Timothy Calnin is an Australian arts administrator whose career has taken him from his home city of Melbourne to senior posts in London, Belfast, Hong Kong and Sydney.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne (where his studies included violin, music history and European languages), Tim began his career as an orchestral manager with the State Orchestra of Victoria (now Orchestra Victoria) before moving to Sydney to perform similar roles with Opera Australia and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He moved to London to become the Manager of The Academy of Ancient Music before taking up the position of Concerts Director with the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast.

On his return to Australia, Tim managed the ABC’s young artists, conductor development and composer commissioning programs for all six Australian symphony orchestras (then under direction of the ABC) before becoming Director of Artistic Planning at the Sydney Symphony, working with Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Edo de Waart. In 2003, he moved to Hong Kong to become Artistic Consultant of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (again working with Music Director Edo de Waart) before being appointed Chief Executive in 2005. During his six years in Hong Kong, Tim expanded the Orchestra’s education, professional development and community engagement programs, including the annual Symphony under the Stars concerts, took the Orchestra on frequent tours to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and secured Swire as Principal Patron of the Orchestra – the biggest arts sponsorship in Hong Kong.

He returned to Australia in 2010 to become General Manager of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. With the ACO, Tim expanded the Orchestra’s international touring program to include residencies (most notably in Hong Kong and at the Barbican in London) and major international festivals (Edinburgh, Tanglewood, Hong Kong Arts Festival), and increased the ACO’s national reach through the growth of its second Orchestra,  ACO Collective and the creation of ACO VIRTUAL, an interactive, digital installation of the Orchestra.

In November 2015, Tim took up the newly created position of Director of Performing Arts at the Sydney Opera House with overall responsibility for the Opera House’s presentations and public programs, its relations with the Resident Companies, and all productions and events.
