Dialogue with HKAAA

Chris Chang, Goooood Secrets Manager and Sidney Hung, Assistant Gooood Manager

Chris Chang (Right) and Sidney Hung

HKAAA: Goooood Secrets has generated some positive response through its activities in recent months. How did this concept arise?

Goooood Secrets: We cannot live without consumption and entertainment. Our concept is to include the elements of charity into everyday life. At first, we mainly rely on an internet platform, which people could use the discount coupons and half of the profits would go to charity. In February this year, we launched our first Goooood Secrets screening at Choi Hung Estate for only 30 people. Participants were required to talk to the locals for instructions for the next stop. The final destination was a Shanghai hair salon, where people could enjoy the movie. At the moment, we have different circuits of cinema, such as “Time Machine circuit” that focuses on Hong Kong old movies. Nowadays Goooood Secrets organizes mysterious screening about every two months and half of the profits go to various non-profit organizations.

HKAAA: Goooood Secrets usually selects films that are related to our love for Hong Kong, while the audience is mostly young people. Why did you make such a connection?

Goooood Secrets: We would like to bring a new experience and encourage everyone to stay curious about life. The choice of location usually makes a difference. For example, we organized screenings at Clear Water Bay Film Studio, Sunbeam Theatre and Kwun Tong Ferry Pier, etc. Although many youngsters have walked across the Sunbeam Theatre, not many of them have watched a movie there. A lot of participants discovered that an old-style cinema could accommodate a large crowd of 600 people. Besides the movie screening, we also encouraged people to dress up in a retro style and bite cane in front of the cinema, to experience the daily life of Hong Kong in the past. Each time before the screening, we will give hints for participants to guess the choice of movie. Participants were happily surprised and gave a big round of applause. The choice of movie for that time at Sunbeam Theatre was “Rouge”, which was a perfect match for the location and atmosphere.

HKAAA: Does Goooood Secrets work with artists and arts organizations?

Goooood Secrets: We choose a different beneficiary groups each time and we supported Hong Kong Women Workers’ Association, Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, etc. And we usually arrange music performances before the screenings. At that time at the Sunbeam Theatre, we arranged an acapella group to go onstage from the audience. Now we always receive inquiries from artists for collaboration opportunities.

HKAAA: Is there any plan from Goooood Secrets?

Goooood Secrets: Film is part of our life. And we also hope to promote the appreciation of literature. A few months ago, we started an app called “Thirty Nine”, which people could pay and download this electronic literature magazine. 30% of the profit from this project supports our daily operation, while 30% of it will pay for the 39 writers and remaining 40% will go to charitable organizations. We are constantly looking for new possibilities. For example, the new “Secret Teaching Unit” will give the participants a chance to learn a new skill that they haven’t imagined.

The Central Conservatory of Music HK Foundation "Piano Recital by Sheng Yuan"
The International Piano Magazine, considered Yuan Sheng "The nation (China)'s premier interpreter of Bach."

Mr. Sheng’s performances and research on the music of Bach have attracted international attention in recent years. The New York Times said that “… the A major and A minor Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, were models of clarity, balance and proportion. That is not to say that they were straightforward or unmediated: Mr. Sheng made the A minor Prelude into a fiery drama, with the equally energetic but stunningly voiced Fugue as an otherworldly rejoinder.”
