Dialogue with HKAAA

HKAAA: " What is the uniqueness of ACC’s fellowship and what professional field and countries would ACC support?"

Josephine: "I am happy to see that there are now more and more forms of support and overseas opportunities available for artists and arts professionals. Naturally, each fellowship program is different and has its own distinct focus. In regard to the ACC fellowship, we are first and foremost focused on supporting the personal and professional development of our grantees, and do not simply support an exchange project.  The grant funds that each ACC grantee receives is just the beginning of our program support.  The bulk of our work actually begins after a fellowship is awarded.  We spend a significant period of time understanding the goals and aspirations of our grantees and provide guidance based upon our knowledge of the contacts and cultural landscape abroad. In addition to ACC in Hong Kong, we have program teams in New York, Taipei, Tokyo, and Manila, and together we provide on-the-ground hosting services and consultation to make connections for our ACC fellows.  With our program support, this time abroad often provides a transformational experience for our alumni.  Our work as well as the relationships that we establish with our alumni lasts far beyond the duration of their fellowship programs. We support primarily Asia to US and intra Asian exchange."

HKAAA: "You describe ACC Fellowship as explorative and non-structural. Could you elaborate more on that?"

Josephine: "A central tenet of the ACC fellowship program is that money alone cannot guarantee a successful learning experience.  ACC's fellowship model combines direct funding with extensive program support services, which creates an immersive experience that deepens the impact of cultural exchange.  Together with our extensive alumni network, we are able to make precise recommendations and valuable introductions that provide grantees a level of insight and guidance that a grant cheque alone cannot offer."

"Our program is unstructured because unlike a typical overseas placement or internship, ACC works with each and every grantee to design a program tailored to their personal and professional research aspirations, making each individual fellowship program unique."

"We encourage grantees to explore new territories, make discoveries, and to go deeper than their initial ideas of their trip, as it is only natural that they would pursue new opportunities that they could not have foreseen when writing their applications months before.  In an ideal scenario, ACC grantees would seize the opportunity to explore a variety of things to the fullest extent and maintain an open mind whilst doing so, moving past preconceptions about what their learning experience abroad would be like.  Some grantees drive across the country, some offer workshops or performances in their apartments, others embark on a new and unexpected collaborations. Visual artists take dance lessons, filmmakers spend days in museums, and art administrators find themselves becoming part of a vibrant network of practitioners from different fields."

"Despite the individually tailored nature of each fellowship, ACC’s goals for its fellowship program remains constant from year or year, which is to provide each grantee with an experience that will challenge, excite, and educate in ways that would be inspirational to them for years to come."

HKAAA: "Usually how competitive is the selection process and what do you expect for this year?"

Josephine: "Every year we receive a greater number of good applications than we are able to support.  In reviewing the applications, we try to identify individuals who would be best suited for the ACC experience, and would be best able to make the use of the opportunities provided.  Since our applications are made through an open call, every year is a surprise and we are unable to predict what the application pool will be like. However, for friends who are interested to submit an application, you can expect that we will treat each application with due diligence and respect."
