Arts Management Seminar Series: Staging Hong Kong Performing Arts in Mainland China
The cultural and creative industries is booming in mainland China recent years, following with the launch of well-equipped performance and exhibition venues as well as different kinds of arts festivals. There has been an increasing demand for art performances. While many art groups and artists would like to bring more great works into mainland China, they hesitate because of the lack of understanding on its market, system and network. To shed light on this topic, Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association invites experts on China market to share their experience and insights.

We are glad to have Ms Karen Cheung, Senior Manager (China Dance Development Programme), CCDC Dance Centre of City Contemporary Dance Company, to talk about her experience on making Beijing and Guangdong Dance Festival the major dance festivals in China. Ms Lotus Chan, Administration Manager, On and On Theatre Workshop and Independent Producer, will talk about how she brings local theatre to cities in mainland and introduce actors into new arts festivals to perform in some interesting venues.

Art Matters

Recap on Arty Hour@HKAAA
Arty Hour@HKAAA on “Summer Cultural Traveling in Europe” was held successfully due to the support of our members and friends.

Each summer, many art lovers like to go to Europe especially for international art festivals and exhibitions. We were glad to have Mr William Chan, Performing Art Critic and Project Manager at the International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong), Mr Law Kwok-ho, Chairman of Hong Kong Association of Theatre Technicians and Scenographers, Producer of PQ2015 Hong Kong Booth and Mr Alan Tang, Founder of Drama Lab and Black Curtain Theatre Company, a new drama group that aims for re-interpretation of classic theatre, to talk about their experience in Holland Festival, International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre and Edinburgh Festival respectively. They shared their experience of joining different art festivals and its uniqueness.

Holland Festival is regarded as one of the festivals with the longest history, and well-known for its innovative programmes and ability to immerse into public space. William mentioned Argentine Director Fernando Rubio’s Todo lo que está a mi lado, which placed some double beds in public spaces like parks, malls and riverside. Actresses will speak to the audience whom lay on the other side of the bed, about their personal stories.

Brought his group of over 10 to the festivals at Edinburgh and London West End, Alan recommended some outstanding theatre works, such as Brite Theatre’s Richard III, which turned a Shakespeare Classic into a female solo play. Also, he likes the intelligent use of muti-media at “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”. Since there are a large number of performances at Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Fringe, Alan reminded visitors to book the tickets and arrange accommodation in advanced.

Kwok-ho stated that Prague Quadrennial is an important opportunity for local theatre technicians to show their skill and vision to the world every four years. Besides staging the Hong Kong Booth with the topic on modern theatre, Kwok-ho also bought his students from IVE to participate a sound exhibition called “Ambient Cube”. After rounds of rehearsals and preparation, Kwok-ho’s team was able to complete the set-up in 15 minutes and showcased the sound of Hong Kong local streets.
