Dialogue with HKAAA

Ms Kate Goodwin, Curator of “The New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio” Exhibition
HKAAA had the pleasure of having Ms Kate Goodwin, curator of "The New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio" Exhibition, to share with our members and volunteers ideas of the Heatherwick Studio’s works in an exclusive tour on 7 Sept at Qube, PMQ. We are happy to have the chance of interviewing Kate about her thoughts on the exhibition, and more on arts and architecture.

HKAAA is one of the supporting organizations of "The New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio" Exhibition.

HKAAA: Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association | Kate: Ms Kate Goodwin, Curator of “The New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio” Exhibition

HKAAA: Could you introduce the major themes and ideas of the Heatherwick Studio?

Kate: Heatherwick Studio defies simple categorization within any one discipline. Instead they work across furniture, product design, infrastructure and architecture, applying creative and inventive thinking to all. They constantly challenge established norms and ask what would make a project extraordinary. They seek an appropriate conceptual idea which will be the essence of a project and shape all aspects of it, giving it a distinctive and memorable identity. The process of making is also very important to the Studio and even as the studio is now very big, they still have a workshop onsite. Many of the smaller early projects that the studio produced were done through discoveries made by working with materials. How something is made is still very important, even on large architectural projects and the studio works closely with consultants and contractors to find new ways of constructing.

HKAAA: “The New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio” is co-presented by the GREAT Britain campaign. What do you think about the relationship between innovations in design and architecture and a city’s culture?

Kate: I think that inventive and creative ideas, seen across all aspects of design can have a profound impact on how a city is perceived and on how we live. Innovative, and indeed very good architecture and design can be inspiring and adding delight to our daily lives.

HKAAA: The relationship between art and heritage has been widely discussed in Hong Kong in recent years. PMQ (Police Married Quarters), where the exhibition takes place, is a fine example of heritage architecture turned arts space. Could you share with us your opinion on transforming the usage of space of heritage sites through arts projects?

Kate: I think creative reuse of buildings is an important way forward as we can’t continually rebuild when a building comes to the end of its practical functioning. Good architecture will often outlive its original use and we can find new ways of bringing life back to them and reusing them. Some of these are through arts projects, but I think they can also be with many other uses.
