“This is a social program and as an artists, I demand that my art be dignified with the mission of creating better human beings.” — Dr Jose Antonio Abreu

The most notable event for the arts scene this week must be Conductor Gustavo Dudamel's performance together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic's first Asian appearance, in the two concerts in the 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the book Changing Lives: Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema, And the Transformative Power of Music. The author Tricia Tunstall is both a writer and a music educator in the US. Changing Lives chronicles the origins and growth of El Sistema, Venezuela’s national music education program founded by Venezuelan music educator Dr Jose Antonio Abreu.

El Sistema began with 11 students in an underground parking garage in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, under the leadership of Dr Abreu. El Sistema is Spanish, meaning social system. El Sistema strives to provide teenagers and children with opportunities to learn classical music, while keeping them away from drugs, violence and crimes. Up to this day, about 400,000 children in poverty have joined the national music education program. Around 100 orchestras have been developed from El Sistema, and countless musicians are nurtured by the program, including the famous Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director of LA Phil. The revolutionary program has now extended to cities in the US such as Los Angeles, Boston and Baltimore, South America, Europe and even Taiwan (Sistema Taiwan).

K11 Art Foundation - INSIDE CHINA Hong Kong Station
K11 Art Foundation partners with Palais de Tokyo in a Sino-French group exhibition exploring new Chinese Art Landscape.

Dedicated to the discovery and presentation of emrging art scenes in China and France, a long-term collaboration between K11 Art Foundation and Palais de Tokyo is inaugurated with the exhibition Inside China – L’Intérieur du Geant. This exhibition was first exhibited at Palais de Tokyo last year in October, and it is rotated to Hong Kong this year with two new participated artists; in which it presents six Chinese artists in dialogue with five French artists.

The artists negotiate over-production, monumentality, and rapid development, by abiding by their own temporalities, turning internal investigation into strangeness of material fact. The Chinese artists capture something ineffable which is deeply connected to the self and engaged with their immediate surroundings and the world: a spirit, an attitude, a sensitivity, and an individual mode of existence. Their works placed in a new context in dialogue with those of the French artists, forming new adjacencies, and productive interferences.
