GM's Good Reads

Without travelling plans in this Chinese New Year's holiday, I decide to take the time to rest and read. Other than a few business and private gatherings ahead, I plan to be reading the recently published "In Dialogue with Hong Kong Arts: 1980-2014".

Edited by Dr Victor Lai Ming Hoi and Prof. Eva Man Kit Wah, the book records the local arts scene from 1980 to 2014, through a collection of interviews of Hong Kong artists and arts practitioners.

Once I glanced at the content page, I felt a strange sense of familiarity as many names on the interviewees list are either my former colleagues or people I am working with today, including our association’s vice-chairman, Mr Benny Chia Chun Heng. Reading the interviews remind me of much memories as many incidents or stories told in the interviews are those that I have heard of, witnessed, participated or experienced myself. The interviews are rich because the interviewed arts practitioners are frank in voicing their own feelings and comments on certain people and incidents. Like most of the interviewees in the book, I started working in the arts field by joining the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC). In the past 15 years, I had worked in the HKAC intermittently for 3 times. Many of the interviewees spoke of their thoughts about the HKAC, some of which I agree while some I hold a different view. One can easily tell from the book that the Hong Kong Arts Centre indeed held a vital role in shaping the Hong Kong arts scene during the 80s and 90s. Artists and arts practitioners trained in their younger days there are the ones who have ever been working hard for the arts.

Although the development of visual arts shares a larger part of the book, the book is a good read for every arts administrator for it helps understanding the past of the local arts scene and moving forward into the future.
