Happy New Year! Wagner's “Das Rheingold” in January!

Happy New Year and wish you a fruitful 2015 with surprises!

It had been a challenging year of 2014 (financial year 2013-2014) for HKAAA. We had to deal with a number of immediate crises when I joined HKAAA in July 2013, thanks to the help of friends and reconstructing the structural and resource framework, we managed to tackle different forms of difficulties. HKAAA have strived for the best in times of challenges and difficulties. We created new ventures in launching different projects, building connections with different sectors in different areas. With the support of different parties, the annual Cultural Leadership Summit was successfully held. What is more satisfying is that the number of beneficiaries of HKAAA has increased by 3 times. I would like to grasp this opportunity to thank the Board for their trust and support, and all the collaboration partners, members, volunteers and participants of HKAAA for their valuable support and encouragement. All of you helped HKAAA to continue in striving to support the advancement of a flourishing arts scene.

2014 had surely been a remarkably eventful year, I think you have plenty of year end reviews. Looking at 2015, I believe it to be a prosperous year. In January we have Hong Kong Philharmonic bringing Wagner’s (1813-1883) “Ring Cycle” to Hong Kong, which would be a prominent event for the local arts scene.

Wagner, the greatest revolutionary in opera history, took 26 years to complete the “Ring Cycle”. Modelled after Greek tragedies, the “Ring Cycle” is presented as three parts and a prologue: “Das Rheingold” (The Rhine Gold), “Die Walküre” (The Valkyrie), “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung” (Twilight of the Gods). The opera lasts 15 hours and takes 4 evenings to play. HK Phil will have two performances on “Das Rheingold” (Part I of the Ring) under the baton of Music Director Jaap van Zweden. HK Phil intends to perform the other three operas of the “Ring Cycle” in the coming years.

To prepare audiences for a better experience of the coming “Das Rheingold” performance, HK Phil is holding three symposia on “Ring Cycle” in November, December 2014 and January 2015, free admission with experts and scholars to walk you through the journey. I joined “Symposium 1: Wagner – His Life and Times” and “Symposium 2: The Appeal of the Ring Cycle”, which were valuable experience. “Symposium 3: Exposition of Das Rheingold” will be held on 24 Jan, featuring Ms Sue Elliot, Director of Education of Seattle Opera as the speaker. Ms Elliot has led an ambitious expansion of the company’s learning and engagement programming that includes commissioning several new works exploring contemporary stories of the Pacific Northwest, and producing a comprehensive educational programme in conjunction with performances of Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” in 2013. How could you miss such an opportunity?
