HKAAA E-newsletter (27.11.2014) - Art Matters: ONE DAY Festival, Korea / 2nd Hong Kong Arts Administration Recruitment Day

Art Matters

ONE DAY Festival, Korea

Our General Manager, Ms Winona Chan had attended a mime show collaborated by a Korean artist and a local artist in Hong Kong during the ONE DAY Festival in July and shared about the Festival in an earlier issue of our e-newsletter. HKAAA is glad to bring you an interview with Ms Sun-ae Kang, Senior Manager of the House Concert, the hosting organization of the ONE DAY Festival, in which she has shared with us the Festival’s objectives and the possibilities of collaborating with Hong Kong arts groups and artists in next year’s Festival.

HC: House Concert | HKAAA: Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association

HKAAA: It’s great to have the opportunity to interview you through the support of UNIQUEPIECE*.Can you tell us something about the ONE DAY Festival? What are the objectives of the launch of the Festival?

HC: The primary purpose of ONE DAY Festival is to focus on the moment. It urges, so to speak, people to become “one” simultaneously by moving for the common purpose even just for a short period of time. To unite people from different countries with different lifestyles must have a huge meaning.

This year, ONE Day Festival was held expanding its range to Korea, China and Japan. Although these three countries are politically intertwined with each other in very complicated ways and still undergo many conflicts, it now is the time to cross the borders and promote sense of community. There must be an alternative plan for the better future and mutual development. This alternative can be more easily and freely discussed at private level than public level. Here the Arts can exert its power. We hope that the festival which was simultaneously held in different venues and countries can be a cornerstone for the better future by showing the unity of countries to countries and artists to audience through the Arts.

It is inevitable fact that commercial culture is the common thing that three countries are very interested in. However, it is undesirable from a long term perspective. It is our hope that this project can contribute to the strong cultural foundation.

HKAAA: Most of the programmes in the Festival for the past two years were music related. Is theFestival trying to include more art forms? Why?

HC: Small the proportion was, but genres which are not related to music have constantly been included in the festival. Based on the belief that there is no art which is not related to music, we are concentrating on organically connecting and developing music and other genres. We are particularly making efforts to assign minimum of 10 percent of concerts to experimental genres such as collaboration between different genres. It is important to keep in mind that every fundamental of the Arts has come from experimental spirits. Although it may seem either interesting or convoluted, we think it is our duty to support it to be popularized.

HKAAA: The Festival this year extended beyond Korea just after its 1st festival in 2013 in Seoul. It seems theproject is a very ambitious one.  What do you think?  Any reasons why the Festival has been developed so quickly?

HC: ONE DAY Festivals have been held just as a process. If you keep looking at our next festival and how effectively we are preparing it, we believe that you can share the joy of this festival with us. However, this festival cannot be held merely by efforts of the House Concert. Participation of people who are interested in and willingly participate in this project is what we definitely need.

We are planning to hold “ONE MONTH Festival” next year which will be held for a month in Asia, Europe and America. If you keep watching what we are doing and will do, you will understand why we said the ONE DAY Festival 2014 is just a process, not the purpose itself.

HKAAA: The Festival worked with one arts organization in Hong Kong this year. Do you think the Festival will involve more arts programmes from Hong Kong?

HC: It would not be so difficult because there are so many opportunities out there. If there is the will, it is possible to make this project happen by cooperating with other institutions and organizations. We think this interview can also be a counterevidence of possibility of further cooperation with foreign countries.
HKAAA: How can Hong Kong artists or arts groups join the Festival?  When will it be held in 2015?

HC: As said before, our annual festival will be held not as “ONE DAY Festival” but as “ONE MONTH Festival” in July, 2015. The period of festival has been extended from a day to a whole month, and the range of venues has also been expanded to Asia, Europe and America. We expect that this festival can increase the opportunities to participate in this project and be a toehold of international cultural exchange.
We already have a specific plan accordingly and look forward to participation of diverse organizations and regions. As the festival is not solely operated by the host, the opportunity to participate is open to all comers. We are planning to visit Hong Kong next year in February. It would be grateful if we can discuss how to cooperate then. If any HK arts groups are interested in joining the Festival, they are also welcome to contact me at hconcert@naver.com / sunkang1@hconcert.com.

HKAAA: Thank you very much. We look forward to more collaboration between Hong Kong and Korea.
